I'm a gnu!

I've found it's really fun to listen to Flanders & Swann while animal-spotting, and I'm wondering now why we use the name 'wildebeest' in preference to 'gnu' now. Does anyone know?

"Gnu" is mostly used in South Africa -- English speakers in East Africa always call them "wildebeest." Which is kind of funny since "wildebeest" is a Dutch word. "Gnu" comes from the Khoisan who are related to the Bushmen.
