Birds

I've seen almost no birds other than a few guinea fowl and a secretary bird... are these species just elusive or rare?

Birds are common in the Serengeti, but they don't usually get caught by the cameras.

I've seen several of the crowned plover, more than any other bird.

I also see what I think are vultures or hawks but they are very small and far away... should I count those?

I saw a marabou stork, close and very clear - loved it!

I saw a vulture, and then two birds of very different appearance -- one black, white and red in separate blocks, and one bright green and yellow. Any ideas what they might be? Seemed to be feeding on the ground, or perhaps collect nest material?

I'm not a birder, but I'd love to know more about what those birds are, too. Tag #bird photos. When the development team gets the searching functionality going, hopefully we can have some birders look through them and tell us what they think they are!

Right, have looked on wikimedia commons and I think the black/white/red is Dinemeliia Dinemelli and the other maybe Agapornis personatus? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Birds_of_Serengeti_National_Park Wish I had marked the photo, though! Do these birds have a common name?

I've seen one definite ostrich, and then this curious thing investigating the camera:

    http://talk.snapshotserengeti.org/#/subjects/ASG0005w4y

It's in the lower left corner in pic # 2 of the sequence - if you click Play, you'll spot it more easily. I tentatively identified it as an ostrich chick, but the last time I was in the Serengeti I was 6 years old, so I'm by no means an expert!

I gave it the #bird hashtag so later on someone else can tell me that I'm wrong.

I've had a #Superb Starling, well the back view, showing that impressive blue colouring. Lots and lots of #guinea fowl, #Crowned Lapwing or #Crowned Plover (Vanellus coronatus), #Ostrich, #Secretary bird to name a few i can remember.
Just been really short of the cat pics, 😦( Cats are my favourite, the Snow Leopard my ultimate favourite cat, but since they don't live on the Seregeti, it will be Servals and Leopards in the Senegeti.

thowes, what you describe sounds like a White-headed Buffalo Weaver and a Fischer's Lovebird, especially if on ground.
