how do predators react to prey alarm calls?

  • Ettina by Ettina

Watching nature documentaries, I've noticed leopards seem to know that their hunt is spoiled when birds start alarm calling at them - they get an annoyed-looking expression and give up on the hunt right away. Do they actually recognize alarm calls, and understand that their prey will be alerted by it? Has anyone researched how predators like leopards react to alarm calls? I can find tons of stuff about how prey animals react to alarm calls, but nothing about how the predators they're calling about react.

Interesting question Ettina. Your right plenty on how the prey reacts. I noticed that the cats seem to do a certain tail flick, when they are caught hunting/noticed in area. my pet cats do a version when you catch them having been spotted, when stalking the other or when they are up to something they shouldn't do, too!!!
