Why no large herds?

I thought (from nature documentaries) that herds of zebra/gazelles hung out in large numbers as a defense strategy. Am I seeing solitary or small groups of plant-eating animals because a) the others are off-camera, b) human activity/loss of habitat have decimated the populations, or c) the cameras are located in areas where there is less food/reason for herds to be there?
Sorry if this is obvious to everyone else, but I was just wondering, as I am new to this site.

The animals you would most see in large herds are gnu, zebra, buffalo, and sometimes gazelles. In pics where the grass is green, you may see such herds. In pics where the grass is brown (dry season) the migratory gnu & zebra will have left, and remaining animals will be more scattered because food is sparse.
