Windy grass

  • tfmorris by tfmorris

Probably half of my classifications so far have been grass blowing in the wind. Is there any attempt to either pre-filter these or use people's early votes to move the surrounding sequences to a lower priority queue? A camera situated like this is going to trigger any time the wind blows.

Although we cut the grass in front of the cameras, in the rainy season the grass grows very quickly. For this camera, the grass grew up in front of the camera before we were able to get back to the site! That said, we do realize that there are a significant number of photos triggered by blowing grass, and are working on a system to pre-filter them.

You might want to consider adding some tags/options to help you collect data that you could use to train a classifier. If you had a bunch of images labelled as "blowing grass," "sky," etc you'd have the raw data to help with your training.

Also, although the images are apparently randomized before being presented to us, they aren't taken at random. They're in a known sequence with a known point of view. Grass grows from the bottom up. Wind blows for periods of time. Sudden shifts in the angle of horizon probably indicate some significant event. Timestamps, votes, image analysis, knowledge of natural phenomena can all be integrated to make the process more efficient.
