Gazelle horns growing the wrong way

  • ahjorth by ahjorth

This gazelle's horn is growing outwards instead of upwards. Is this common? I've seen a few of these. Would it cause problems for them in terms of survival? Maybe females aren't as inclined to mate with males with bad horns and vice versa. And how can you tell if a #tommy is male or female?

I saw in another thread (wish I could find it again, sorry!) one of the scientists said that about 25% of female Thomson Gazelle have wonky horns. And don't the males have much longer horns? I'm sure the example pics show a male with beautiful long, ridged horns.

Here's one I got earlier - I figured it shows a male on the left, with long horns, and one, possibly two, females on the right, with the much shorter horns.
