What is this lion behavior?

  • khjensen by khjensen

I can't figure out what's going on in this picture. Looks like an adult male lion standing in the foreground and an adult female lion lying sprawled on her back. But what are the objects around the female? Are those cubs? (Looks like a pair of little hind paws in the air behind the female's neck, but the objects between the male and the female look kind of long to be cubs.) And why is the male pawing the ground?

Oh, on second thought, the male is not pawing the ground, he's just taking a step forward. I sometimes forget that the flipbook creates these effects! I'm still interested in whether there are cubs in the picture and if so, what are they doing? Nursing or just hanging out?

Its a pride of lion all snoozing, the male has either just arrived or is changing position but the pawing is just him about to settle down. Looks like about 6 adults/ sub adults

This appears to be of the same pride, except the male only just arriving.

Ah, thank you! Looks like a nice snooze they're having.
