Disjointed pattern on zebra's leg

I've not seen anything like this on a zebra before - is it genetic? Or somehow the result of a cut or slash?

Nice one! You're right, that zebra received a huge slash in its thigh and the stripes got offset as it healed. Sometimes wounds like that are caused by lion near-misses, but it looks like a cleaner cut than lions make.

I wondered if it might be that. And yes, it looks like that slash was created by something razor sharp, with no tearing or ragged edges. Thanks David!
