How dangerous is the work out in the field actually?

He looks like he's wandering about with a cup of coffee... just another day at the office. 😉

I've been wondering how dangerous this work actually is for the guys and gals checking up on the camera traps. I'm guessing the really big animals like hippos and buffaloes would be easy enough to spot and avoid from further away, but what about the lions and other predators?

Its all relative, those people that work in the field normally have a good feel for the situation they are in, their eyes and ears are open to signs of animal activity. Just the same as someone who has to regularly traverse a bad part of town to get to work. Field researchers aren't often lost to wild animals but it does happen.

It is also worth bearing in mind that, generally, a lot of animals will actively avoid humans. It would be most unusual for an animal to attack unless it felt threatened or it felt that its young were in danger.

That said, researchers still have to be vigilant and it is best to avoid any potential close encounters.
