Can someone tell me what animal this is? I probably spent about 15 minutes trying to figure it out, before making a stab-in-the-dark guess with not a great deal of confidence at all.

It's a baby buffalo. A real young baby. This would have been hard to identify, since we show you adults in the reference picture.

Nice baby buffalo no horns is the big thing in foxing identification, shape and colouring might lead you towards identification but the slighter build and lack of the typical horns makes it not so obvious unless you have seen a juvenile before.
