can' t quite make out what animal this is. it looks like the tail end of a cat.

That's actually a wildebeest, with another standing behind it. What you're seeing is its shoulders and neck, with its head down and to the left as we look at it. The black hair is its mane, which is hanging down the far side of its neck. Wildebeest have darker stripes over their shoulders and neck, which are more defined in some animals than others - at a distance, the stripes often blend into their long mane, and aren't always particularly visible.
