A fuzzy butt- but what is it?

  Can't seem to grab before and after camera shots; not sure what this is? Guesses?

  Agreed. I think "fuzzy" is particularly apropos for hyenas- the length and texture of their fur seems to make it stand up everywhere. To me they always seem to look a bit unkempt.

  Also, if you enlarge the photo, it looks like you can see some spots.
