Hashtags

  • maricksu by maricksu moderator

Hashtags are later used by scientists and other people, when they search images, e.g. of some particular animal. It is important, that hashtags are useful and marked to correct animals. Hashtags should not be used with questions or unsure ones. Also, no need or use to tag everything.

Here great links with lots of useful information about how to use and when to use hashtags πŸ˜ƒ

Main thing is though classifying, not tagging. We are supposed to classify every photo in the season, not to tag every photo.

No need and not useful to tag every photo, just those you feel are worth sharing for some reason, with some interest. Which ones these are is down to your personal choice, but it is good to keep in mind that hashtags loose their ”power” as a useful tool to find photos with some interest, if used too much.
Above, earlier mentioned in this discussion, are absolutely great links with lots of useful information about how to use and when to use hashtags.

It is very welcome to tag those interesting ones (when sure ID) for also others to see, and those can be also later found with Search-possibility . Also many collections include hashtags, meaning tagged photo goes automatically into them. But if every e.g. eating zebra is tagged, those interesting zebra-photos will drown into that load and are hard to find. πŸ˜ƒ

Just a reminder about hashtags, some classifiers are still hashtaging images they are not sure of. Please only use a hashtag if the image is particularly interesting and you are sure of the id. Also look down the comments box before you hashtag, if someone has already used the hashtag for that image there is no sense in hashtagging it again.

Lucy, maybe the caption of the "Comments" box could be modified? At present it says "Say something, or mark with a #hashtag". There is really no instruction about how hashtags are to be used (except here!)

Good idea, I shall contact Meredith and the zooniverse team and see if they can change it, I don't have access to stuff like that.
