It's a spotted dikkop, aka spotted stone-curlew; plover-sized bird, mostly nocturnal.

My field guide lists dikkop. stone-curlew, and thick-knee as names for these birds. Common names can be so problematic! Anyway, scientific name is Burhinus capensis.
