Any Ideas? - Mystery Skin

  • MGHogue by MGHogue

I'm sure a lot of us have gotten good at ID'ing animals by their parts, patterns . . . ears, noses, blurry shot of an eye - but this? This is a new one to me. I haven't seen any animals with this 'texture', nor a hippo by day up close - anyone have a clue?

Having great fun, BTW, and the grandkids, too, lol!

If I had this one myself, I think I would have classified it as a Lion. This is based on the overall size, short tan fur, and what looks like a typical lion shoulder on the left side of the image.

After a bit of digging, I found another capture from the same camera that day. It's from an hour earlier, but it does at least confirm some lions were in the area:

yes, I would say lioness too, just from the slope of the back as it goes up to the shoulder. Has that slinky cat look to it

Lion sounds reasonable to me. Can't say I've ever seen one up close enough to know - except in photographs, LOL! I'll bear it in mind the next time this one - or one like it - comes up. Good call, guys and gals. Thanks for your help! 😄
