Carcass, fire?

  • eugenius by eugenius

What's going on in the right foreground? Is that a head in the first frame?
Fire just behind it, to the left (there seems to be smoke)? With the wind blowing,
    I'm surprised the camera survived!
Any further info about this image?

Yes, the grass is on fire. You can see a burned area just behind the foreground grass. Here are a couple of captures of the aftermath: ASG000p92v (you can still see a few small flames working on the rest of the foreground grass) and ASG000p92w (foreground grass has all been burned).

There are a number of fire captures from different cameras. From what I've heard, some cameras are lost to fires (not as many as are lost to mischievous animals, though!), but perhaps the cameras are placed just high enough to avoid the flames. Also, the team's habit of cutting back the grass around the cameras to improve visibility probably also helps reduce fuel in the immediate vicinity of the cameras.
