Bird on ASG0011hlr

  • majortim by majortim

perhaps a ring-necked dove cf. http://talk.snapshotserengeti.org/#/subjects/ASG0011hm6, but actually it doesn't have a black spot on it's neck , wikipedia got a nice picture of Streptopelia capicola somalica which also clearly showas that this very species doesn't have a which throat like the bird in the picture. According to wikipedia (which is of course always taken cum grano salis) there are 17 species of doves/pigeons in the country. Hmmm looking at all of these 17, Streptopelia capicola somalica comes closest.

Hmmm another possibility, even though that place is far away from the sea, this bird looks like a gull. This picture was taken in northern winter so it could be a migratory gull.

    Actually, a lot of words meaning " I don't really know" 😉

Only two possibilities - ring necked or mourning dove. Both occur there and are only distinguished by call and eye color (respectively black and red/yellow). I can't tell from this photo.

So that would be either Streptopelia capicola or Streptopelia decipiens?
That's also the favourite place of the Elands.
