    This bird looks like the Weka (aka Wood Hen) which we get in New Zealand. I wonder if it is looking for worms? There might be another further back in the grass.

    Looks like it is one of the Francolins/Spurfowl, related to pheasants and partridges. See the ID page here.
    Weka, though similar in colour, shape, size etc are a type of rail, more closely related to cranes.
