What are these elephants doing?

  Are they sleeping? For some reason I have always imaged them sleeping while knelt down instead of actually lying on their side.

  Yes, sleeping or resting. It's mostly the younger ones that lie down to rest, and always on their side - really big ones seem to sleep standing.
