Elephant trunk

  • tillydad by tillydad moderator

The African elephant has a trunk with two "fingers" at the tip, compared with the Asian elephant that only has one . This means that the African Elephant can grip a wide range of objects from something very small such as a twig or leaf up to large items such as branches or fruits with it's "fingers" .
The Asian elephant has to grip objects with its trunk, wrapping it around items up to the size of large branches and logs . The African elephant can also wrap its trunk around very large objects and so, overall, has the more versatile trunk of the two species 😃

Hi @tillydad, in reading the fun fact on elephants, I thought you and everyone here at Snapshot Serengeti might like to see the Elephants of Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia. The following is written about them:

Every year when the mangoes are ripe a family of wild elephants visit Mfuwe Lodge. Led by their matriarch Wonky Tusk they carefully make their way through the Lodge's reception area and onto the grounds where the mango tree stands.

Some more info on Wonky Tusk and her family.

Thanks @WillowSkye for the great link . Elephants just love fresh fruit and will use that great trunk of theirs to pilfer any fruit within reach 😃

The elephants used to eat the fruit of this tree before the lodge was built, so still make their way to it despite the lodge being in the way! What memories they have!
