Snapshot Serengeti Talk
This tree always seems so lonely. Nice to see it getting some #zebra love.
#Wildebeest with #young
Grazer party! #Eland, #zebra, and #wildebeest.
I'd love to know what these #impala are so intently focused on. More going on here than we can see, I think.
#aardwolf
Just had this one, too. The sunlight has a "National Geographic photo" quality to it.
Just adding my own Wow! to this one. A rare addition to my Favorites collection.
Two #zebras in the background are enjoying a dust wallow. Don't know that I've caught zebras doing this before.
#bird-other
Revisiting because I just now saw this sequence was the subject of the SS blog the day after we posted it!
#Impala
That's what I guessed, but the long hair starting immediately at the base (top) seemed odd. Looks more like a horse than anything else.
Whose tail is this?
#Wildebeest serving as a convenient perch.
#Thomsons-gazelle #selfie plus #interacting.
Thomson's gazelles with #young.
I probably shouldn't be cluttering up the comments like I am, but I just keep getting one great image after another. π
#bird-other. Marabou storks on the tree?
Dragonfly! Unfortunate that the "square" is muddling the image.
I'll just hashtag #scratching also, for the benefit of those who collect or, like me, otherwise enjoy these images. π
New pairing for me- Grant's gazelles and elephants.
Nice #warthog capture. Walking in step, even!
Looks like a hot day! #Buffalo
#Elephants
The zebra were definitely a "How closely are you paying attention?" test. Glad I caught them- nearly just clicked 11-50 wildebeest.
That's either a near-newborn #wildebeest or a dik-dik. π
Thomson's gazelle #scratching
#eland
Another good reminder to always check all three frames!
Excellent #kori_bustard capture.
I know this because I posted a similar question several seasons back. π Also, a herd of wildebeest in the background.
It's a dangling tip of a tree branch, overexposed by its closeness to the camera flash.
Ideas? I said tommie based on height and habitat, but really this doesn't look much like any of our options to me.
3 #warthogs #eating. David B educated me about this warthog behavior at Wildcam Gorongosa.
Not so many night-time #giraffe captures in our collection.
And each other! A partial eclipse of a wildebeest there on the left.
#running #zebras
Ironically, I'm classifying this picture during a partial eclipse.
Expanding the picture ("CTRL +" on a Windows desktop) reveals the familiar stripes of zebras. Also birds in the tree.
I finally realized why I was having trouble figuring out which part of a zebra this was.
Thomson's gazelle, 10, Standing, Eating. Nose, 1, Nosing.
#wildebeest #running. Good action shot!
#Elephants wtih #young
This shows... both types of our Serengeti gazelles? That white stripe on the closest one isn't familiar to me. Also, #young.
My new favorite #buffalo capture. I love the casual attitude of the one taking a #bath, plus #young as an added bonus.
#zebras in a nearly-symmetric pose.
#thomsons-gazelle either scratching or grooming.
Nice horns, guys! #Impala
#Thomsons-gazelle. Two #running amid three just standing.
It looks like this #wildebeest is trying to figure out what the camera is seeing. I like the way it cocks its head in the first frame.
#baboons
The Serengeti sea anemone is rarely seen in our images.
#Zebra #interaction, up close.
He has a second mane on his elbow.
Look! It's a.... a.... bird?
If you enlarge the picture and tilt your device a bit, you can see outlines of #wildebeest.
I feel like two more frames would show the zebra on the left getting bitten on its backside.
One bird and a bunch of insects in flight. Four #guinea-fowl not in flight.
This looks like a dance.
Darn, missed those. I was trying to figure out the one standing up and the crowd under the tree. Lots going on here, it seems.
Meaning, a high-quality capture of impala. Although it is also likely a capture of high-quality impala.
High-quality #impala capture.
Is that a mongoose upright on its haunches to the right of the plant stalk at right?
Lioness? Hyena? Rounded ear, anyway.
A #hartebeest fivesome, taking a break from a long day of hartebeesting. Possibly a young one lying down?
Bushbuck, judging by the spots on the side.
I like how the third #wildebeest stands up in frames 2-3 to reveal itself in the background.
Tres. #Guinea-fowl eating as a #Thomsons-gazelle and its impala friend enjoy the shade together.
Wish we could see more of what I think is a young one behind it. Looks like thinner and shorter legs.
#Young #wildebeest #nursing.
#thomsons-gazelle #scratching
#Young #hyena.
Congratulations! First finds are always exciting.
Love this parade of #elephant s.
Interesting! And unexpected. To my eyes, they've retained even more physical similarity than our two gazelles.
#wildebeest #scratching
It takes an #elephant to hide an elephant. Two separate #young elephants visible in different frames.
I think that on their respective evolutionary pathways, reedbucks and bushbucks diverged from a common ancestor approximately last Tuesday.
Reedbuck, if I'm not mistaken. Almost, but not quite, sure enough to hashtag.
#bird-other. I've got a couple of possible suspects in mind, but I'll leave the ID to people who know and wouldn't be just guessing.
It seems the camera is arousing someone's curiosity.
I think all of the SS vervet monkey captures I've seen have been from this same camera at this same tree.
These nighttime captures lead to all sorts of optical illusions. (See my recent post in Talk about the "rhinoceros" I found. π )
Wildebeest, resting on the ground. Rear end is facing us, head is turned to the left. The pointed caracal ears are its horns.
I'd like to think the next image in this sequence has the camera pointing straight up at the sky. #warthog
Bath time!
I wonder why these 3 #wildebeest are #running when all the rest are calmly grazing.
I think this is the babiest #baby wildebeest I've ever seen on here.
Chillin' with the herd.
Serengeti: home to amazing wildlife, spectacular sunsets, and random ear fuzz.
New personal #lion record for me- I counted 7.
#Wildebeest #running
The rare African cloudbird in flight.
Clash of #impala. I don't add many to my favorites, but this one made it. #dailyzoo
HELLO I AM MAGNIFICENT!
Excellent #cheetah capture!
I think this paw's owner is onto us and our cameras.
I expect "rodent" and "wildebeest" are seldom guessed for the same photo. π
NOW I can see that what I thought was a tree is the neck and back of a wildebeest. So the eyeshine at the base of the "tree" isn't a rodent
I agree, but I absolutely do see what could be taken as a feline face and long legs in the broken tree. Nice optical illusion!
Magnified (CTRL++++++), some of the animals seem to have the characteristic wildebeest oblong head and sloping back.
Serval was my first thought, but in the end I went with jackal, thinking that the ears weren't quite large enough for a serval. Tough one.
Handsome #Thomson's_gazelle, freshly rained upon.
#Young #wildebeest. Lots of others in the distance.
Pair of #hippopotamus. First time I've gotten more than one in a capture.
What a fantastic photo. #Jackal, #zebra, and awesome #clouds.
High drama on the plains. Fighting #wildebeest.
#lion couple.
I had trouble with this one. Two... rodents of some type, maybe?
Also of note is the high-speed #wildebeest in the background on the left.
This looks like two #zebra halves stitched together. Badly.
Great #leopard photo. (Of course, EVERY leopard photo is a great leopard photo. π )
Photoshop??? This picture is weird.
Hold CTRL and hit + several times to enlarge. A few show the distinct profile of wildebeest.
Totally does, yes! My best guess: thick body & legs + proportionally huge head + dark fur = buffalo.
Great shot of a beautiful #Grant's gazelle.
#running #hyena
#hyena. Great shot!
Cool, thanks! I couldn't make a positive ID from the bird guide. Wish I knew the birds better.
Two birds on the right, at the edge of the tree shadow. ID from our knowledgeable types?
Tail feathers of a bird perched on the camera housing. You'll see this sometimes on these cameras in grassland areas.
One of these things is not like the others...
I said TOPI but I was wrong,hartebeest is corerct.π¦
Rainstorm.
I FINALLY got a #bat-eared_fox!
π The comment was made by a child who likes SS a lot and, I'm just now learning, has learned how to add comments on his own.
"Battling warthogs" notwithstanding, he actually does very well classifying when we do SS together.
Hmmm... It would appear my elder child has learned to classify and comment on his own.
Battling ...warthogs?
Crazy camras.
What set this off?
Beautiful shade of blue.
Serval, extreme close-up.
#lion #cub
Does this one KNOW it's getting its picture taken?
#scratching
Is this hare bleeding?
Can't see if there's a mane or not, so I guess we'll never know whether this #lion is male or female.
#topi #scratching
#cheetah
#zebra #nuzzling
Hyena cub?
Unquestionably a... terrestrial animal of some kind.
Great #lioness !
I chose wrong, too. Rarely on SS is one faced with the dilemma of "aardvark or elephant?"
Hit CTRL and + at the same time, multiple times. CTRL 0 returns you to original size.
With enough zoom, zebra stripes and/or shape become visible at left and right, and Thomson's gazelle black stripes at center
I have a lot of those "Aw geez!" moments.
They're guinea fowl.
Topi, based on size, hump, and horn shape. Too bad- the trademark beautiful rich brown and black coat is lost in the sunlight.
With zoom (hit "CTRL +" several times), the sunlight glinting off really big horns becomes visible. Impala.
Wildebeest (best guess), facing left. At right is top of leg and haunch, joining his hip. From bottom center, "his" is definitely correct.
Wildebeest #nursing
I keep learning things here by being wrong. Thanks for the expert opinion- now I know!
Ostrich
Spectacular #sunset
Another wildebeest
Young wildebeest would be my guess, although the ridge of fur on the back usually looks more black.
The best part is the two tails on the right swinging in synch.
Tough one. Camera is 1 meter off ground, so it's small-ish. 1st frame seems to show a thin tail- warthog?
I'd vote wildebeest, based on grayish-grown coloration and what looks like long dark hair on right.
If you zoom several times by hitting "CTRL +" you can see a faint wildebeest shape appear.
Tail feathers of a bird perched on the camera housing. They seem to like to do that.
Vervet monkey- my first in Season 8
"This buffalo took the wrong kind of bath" - my 7-YO son, who takes baths to get mud OFF.
#buffalo, post mud bath
It can help to zoom- hit "CTRL +" several times. Also, even reasonable guesses based on size/shape/color are better than nothing.
#selfie plus zebra photobomb
Impala or Grant's gazelle. (I'd vote impala based on apparent thickness of horns, but I'm unsure.)
#warthog
Best #leopard shot I've ever gotten.
#waterbuck
#elephant
#running
Wildebeest- the skin on their necks seems to be kind of loose-fitting and often shows that "wrinkle" pattern.
Keep hitting CTRL + to enlarge- the second animal looks like a zebra, plus you'll see a Thomson's gazelle.
Yes.
Tail feathers of a bird perching on the camera housing.
Yes- horns join together at top of head. Looks like this one took a mud bath or something.
Marabou stork. There's info on them in the Science/Birds/Large Birds discussion. But yes, not one of our choices.
Eland. The stripes aren't usually that visible in most SS captures. Nice!
Hartebeest. Light brown color + small dewlap on chest.
Best #ostrich pic I've ever gotten. I was enthusiastic enough that I missed whatever's in the background.
Two minutes before: http://talk.snapshotserengeti.org/?_ga=1.140748466.1863084930.1396382600#/subjects/ASG001c6uo
#ostrich for the ostrich collectors
Shake that booty!
Thin, coarse hair + dark, leathery skin = warthog. This one definitely didn't want to make it easy for you, though.
Hold CTRL and hit the plus sign repeatedly to zoom the picture. The black stripe of a Thomson's gazelle will become apparent.
Hartebeest in background and lower right corner, so that large backside at right probably belongs to one, too.
I guessed hare, based on body posture, but who knows. Other ideas?
#topi #running
#lioness pool party
#serval #selfie (esp. frame #3)
Warthog- see photos before or after in sequence.
Large + light brown fur + rounded ear shape suggests lion. See next photo in sequence for confirmation (in URL, change the last c to d)
If you maximize the view (use CTRL+ repeatedly) that distinctive wildebeest profile starts to appear.
It's a buffalo- flies love them and can be used as a good indicator on an otherwise unclear capture.
Cancel that- after viewing on a larger screen, I'm going to change my vote to buffalo.
Wildebeest. In ASG000ygt9, it turns its head and you can make out the silhouette of its horns.
Feline look + big ears with rounded tops = serval. You can see its fur markings in the next photo.
Hard to tell what's in this image, but there was a warthog right in front of the camera one minute before.
"Tell me I'm pretty!"
Correct. That rich brown with black accents is a good indicator, even if there aren't distinctive horns to be seen.
Click on the photo. In the URL, replace the last character (0-9 or a-z) with the next or previous number or letter in sequence.
Buffalo (dark color, large size, fur). Photo before shows swarming flies- also a good buffalo indicator.
Wildebeest, based on before-and-after captures that show a large group. This photo alone would be difficult, though.
I'd likely have said so, too, based on coloration, but several captures before and after this one show nothing but topi.
Wildebeest based on fur color and horn shape, but I don't know what the washed out furry feature at left foreground is.
2 crowned lapwing plus a Thomson's gazelle that's either pregnant or needs to eat less junk food.
It's the tail of a bird perched on the camera housing.
Buffalo, 1, Standing. Fly, 1000+, Buzzing.
Warthog, looking straight into the camera from close range.
Of all the giraffes I've ever seen, I would designate this one as the "blotchiest."
RΓΌppell's Griffon Vulture (I think) preening.
Finally got #1 on my Most Wanted list. Photo captured on my 10th anniversary, no less.
Wildebeest nursery!
