Snapshot Serengeti Talk
Ah, #sunrise in the Serengeti... (Actually, Tom/Mike, which camera is this and what direction is it pointing?)
#adorable
Haha, was that an #autocorrect-fail ? (my phone does that to me relentlessly.)
Looks like it's one of us holding up the #blackboard. It's just really blurry.
someone's been bringing in #cattle to graze...
We've put this to some Serengeti and some insect experts: they can't decide between flying termites, ants, bees, or even grasshoppers!
This is crazy! @davidbygott or @craigpacker, any ideas?
#lion
I think that might be #cattle instead of #buffalo, but not sure.
#classic #sleeping #lion
#eland #eating
#tommy #selfie
#amazing
looks like a #lion ear!
#caracal #selfie
I think it's a #bat-eared fox - the tail is definitely mongoose-like, but it's head and legs look foxy to me.
oof, that's a tough one. I'd say it looks like the top or tail of something spotty, but no idea what. #impossible
#awesome
#tortoise!!!
Definitely a #wildebeest
lovely topi
white-tailed #mongoose -- quite common at night. Big bushy tails do make them tricky!
#zorilla!!! So few of these...
white-tailed #mongoose
#baby #porcupines!!!!!
and two #dikdik ! it's a party...
haha, #hartebeest are already funny looking -- this angle doesn't help!
birds-eye view of a #warthog bead!
#zebra #eating
#koribustard showing off for the camera
#hyena PLEASE DO NOT EAT MY CAMERA!!!!
I think it's contemplating munching the camera...
Awesome close-up aardvark!!
#fire
probably getting ready for a snooze!
I wonder what sent them running!
my first guess is that is a #wildebeest there with the #zebra, even though it's quite brown.
#aardvark !!!
Gorgeous #eagle
#white tailed mongoose
#baby eles are #awesome
Hm, that does look odd -- perhaps an injury that is swollen?
It's a jackal -- bat-eared foxes carry their heads very low and have more of a humped shape to them.
I'd say #civet - you can sort of see some faint, washed out spots in the bottom left
I suspect this is a fallen tree branch being stepped on by a zeb in the foreground, and lots of zebs (& possibly wildes) in the background
definitely a #porcupine. these things are so cool!
#hyena ear - its nose is pointing to the ground
#running
#mismatch
Some of our cameras are close the the border with the NCA, #Maasai live. In the dry season, they bring their #cattle into Serengeti.
#weird! I'm going to agree with parsfan -- the ears are very serval like...but am hoping that @davidbygott and @craigpacker can weight in!
If only all the animals were this distinctively marked!
Yup! I will admit that cutting the grass isn't too pleasant either, and can be a surprising amount of work when done by hand like this!
man, these little critters get on their feet fast!
Mamma #wildebeest with a tiny #baby wilde by her feet
awesome #civet !!
#hippo walking towards the camera
so #shaggy
#tiny baby #hartebeest -- "kongoni" in Swahili. The odd head-shape helps with the ID. I think these guys are super funny looking.
Can't think of anything manmade. Could it be afterbirth? Have definitely seen gazelles munching away on theirs in front of the cameras...
gahhh! this is why my cameras get destroyed!!
The bright white spot is probably a moth flying close to the camera and thus getting overexposed. Our flashes (as you can see) are bright!
#wildebeest belly
This really is what they do allllll day. Not always the most riveting animals to watch in the field!
waterbuck! they always look way too shaggy to be in Serengeti.
#warthogs get down on their knees to graze -- pretty cool to watch!
sometimes the cameras will stay foggy for a long time after heavy rains. usually they recover, but not always...i
Definitely a #wildcat!
#lol
it looks like the tail of a bird -- raptors often use the cameras as a perch to eat their lunch...and leave "presents" behind on top!
#spotted hyena - you can tell by that camera-hungry gleam in their eyes. grumble
#baboon -- females have pink, hairless butt patches that turn really red when they're ready to mate
it's probably #wildebeest in the difference, but they're way too far off to tell, so don't worry about them.
with manes like that, it's really no wonder that #male #lions aren't very good at sneaking up on their prey.
#masaai
#landrover
we cut the grass in front of the cameras so they don't misfire constantly.
it's the tsetse flies. i'm melting in there, but it's the only way to stave off the super painful, super itchy bites of the tsetse flies.
does this remind anyone else of fighting with their sibling for the biggest piece of cake as a kid?
Yup! Baby #wildebeest (and all horned ungulates, actually) have horns that start off straight and then get curvy as the grow up.
agreed on #cheetah
perhaps #rutting
#wildebeest -- you can tell by the coloration and the beard.
#Rhino ! Another nice find.
#Buffalo
Definitiely an #elephant
#white-tailed-mongoose
#spotty zebra...huh...
curious #giraffe
#lions & #hyenas
#buffalo calf -- they look a bit different than the adults!
tricky #hyena at night
oh wow. my guess is it's a #hartebeest -- and yeah, that's...intimate!
#caracal is a rare find!
I spend a lot of my time "lawnmowing" the Serengeti...(to keep the cameras from misfiring)
#mongoose
