Snapshot Serengeti Talk
First #hippo for the season for me.
#human with Serengeti Lion Project #4wd
Whose pink nose?
#human young present 😃 #4wd
#human young present 😃
#rain pelting down hard
Looks kind of warthoggy.
#zebra, surely?
#slate J12 10:31 Date not evident. #human
#giraffe the one with its head down has decided that high feeding is for other giraffes.
Okay, opened the image in a new tab, and really zoomed in. Can make a large quadruped out now, thanks, I thought you were joking before.😃
#jackal
I'm just seeing black, myself. Don't see a hide nor hair of a hare or hartebeest - I dunno what Artman40 or tillydad are on about.
#aardwolf Not something I remember seeing before.
#bird Some sort of plovers or lapwing perhaps. We have similar looking ones in Australia. Something for the Intrepid Serengeti Birders.
#vehicle
Alway wondered where sausages came from. 😃
Is that a seedpod or someone's tail? Bottom of image, left of centre.
Will do, ta!
Are there rabbits on the Serengeti? It looks most like a hare out of the choices, but the ears seem a bit short.
Looks like one's got a radio tracking collar too. Is there a hashtag for that?
#4wd
Cool!
#warthog leaving now
Would that be a tusk in the first frame?
Aargh these little ones always have me second guessing.
Nice one! Or two, I should say. 😃
#vehicle just vanishing off to the left
#giraffe
Great camera angle on this one.
#spotted-hyena
#flowers
#thompsons
#bird may be identifiable by the Intrepid Serengeti Birdwatcher Society
Tricky.
#thompsons teleporting.
Well there's #zebra there, but what is going on in the foreground?
Is that a vehicle moving in the distance on the right?
Great #aardvark capture.
Thanks. First half a caracal, any way!
Dikdik, duiker or steenbok?
#bushbuck are apparently very camera shy.
#selfie #thompson
Most #impala I've seen together for a while.
Something's got this #impala 's attention.
#human #slate 5 sep 14 EO6 08:27
I'm not at all confident in the identification here.
#hyaena-spotted
Very nice!
Might this be a #caracal ? First one I've seen I think...
#zebra #baby
Ooh, my first #topi for Season 9.
#bird Is that one of those Lilac Rollers that the Intrepid Serengeti Birdwatcher Society have identified for me before?
#human I think.
Aw #baby #impala
#secretarybird and a fine capture of one at that.
He's a #warthog that's working on being a babirusa, and she's an oxpecker with a penchant for travel. Together they fight crime!
My first #lioness of Season 9. Or possibly #lion.
#zebra with something odd about its lips I can't quite make out - maybe just something it's eating, maybe scarring or a bird, don't know.
#aardvark
#selfie
#giraffe Pretty good capture!
#4wd #human
Is that a #warthog rump?
Nothing I can see here, but it looks like an interesting site.
#impala horn, I think?
#warthog Is that a dust-devil?
Well, this looks very odd.
I think it's an ear...
I think it might be a mother warthog, just an odd angle.
Is that a vehicle moving in the distance?
Large number of animals moving in the distance. Are they too small to be wildebeest?
Oh hey, a couple of #mongoose I think.
#bird
#zebra #selfie
Thanks!
World's longest #zebra
#human #slate 28 jun 14 LO8 09:40 #4wd
#slate I can't really make out the markings though.
#impala
Neck, shoulders and back of another antelope?
Is that a bit of serval I'm seeing in the middle?
#bustard
#human #4wd
#warthog
#rodent #springhare
No animals present except for the fierce lurking Serengeti Stick.
#human #slate #researcher 05 Apr 14 CO5 09;14
#noflash
First I thought it was a seismosaurus but then I saw it was an #ostrich
#whiteout
#human #researcher
Reminds me of the cover of Abbey Road.
#butterfly
Is that a #bat flying behind the #wildebeest?
#human #slate 27 Jan 14 C10 14:32
half a #selfie
Wonderful big #eland with some sort of oxpecker type bird in residence.
#selfie #zebra
Well, I don't know. Could it be a serval's front leg as it drapes itself over the camera? Maybe not fluffy enough.
I'd maybe go with Grant's, the ear isn't black tipped, so not an impala, and can't see any black on the side, so not a Thomson's. Maybe.
Zooming in, I'd go with zebra. I might be wrong, but that's what I'd put. I think I see stripes, and the hair looks like zebra mane.
Good diagnostic shot of an #eland showing those square patches on the backs of the front legs that aren't mentioned in the description.

Classic #human Slate 24 Apr 14 LO7 10:04
Wow!
I wonder if it's the moon? Or an elephant's eye? Beats me.
I think it might be a #spring-hare
Very fine #impala having a scratch.
Any ideas on what the black animal on the left could be? A young melanistic zebra? Would the tail be right for that?
Yes, I think so. Maybe a Grant's? Can't really tell even if I zoom.
Maybe male #lion ? Nearly missed it.
Maybe an identifiable #bird by the Intrepid Serengeti Birdwatchers?
How #wildebeest get up, in three stages. In case you ever wondered.
#guinea-fowl
Is that a #bird #selfie?
Many #zebra are lured to their doom of a night by the Serengeti will o' the wisp.
This #thomsons-gazelle is standing so still it looks like a cardboard cutout.
A very easy identification this time. #hippo
Hard without the head...
lovely #spotted-hyena
fog or #fire ?
I wonder if it's a lilac breasted roller? I bet the Intrepid Serengeti Birdwatching Association would know, it's a great photo.
I'm not at all sure of the two things I'm seeing here.
29 Apr 14 EO7 08:13 #slate
Hartebeest and baby hartebeest is what I'd put, they've got those really long noses. Giraffe would be much much taller.
It's a tricky one, I'd guess buffalo but I wouldn't be certain dppashby
#zebra
Very fine #Thomsons-Gazelle
It's a magic bean!
It's a #lioness - some of them have collars for research
#spotted hyena with lasers.
#impala and bonus couple of #baboon
#selfie and just amazing!
This is a tricky one. A couple of #zebras are clear enough, but the animal behind the thorns on the right has me puzzled.
That's a lot of #wildebeest
Looks odd, what am I seeing?
#jackal I think.
#thompsons-gazelle Small dust-devil or willywilly in the background?
16 NOV 13
One of the darker #zebra I've seen here
Nice clear view of a bunch of female #impala See the black tipped ears, and the black spots on the heels?
#fire
#zebra #wildebeest contrail!
Hey cool, #ostrich
Just try your best guess. I would tend toward Impala, but that's just me.
The rare Serengeti ground squid, spyhopping. No, really.
#hare
Gah!
Not a Buffalo which are black and massive, much thicker legs, usually in a cloud of flies. Not a cow I don't think. Start from tufted tail.
#water
I can only see the glowing eyes, no horns, no matter how much I magnify.
#buffalo and #baby I think?
It might be, or could it be a vehicle kicking up dust?
#buffalo but is that a predator lurking behind?
#topi by night
Oh who's a handsome #spotted-hyena having a lovely yawn and stretch then?
I would tend toward serval, but I'm no expert. The spots are sort of running into each other, and the shadow on the left has big serval ears
#cheetah
I am not sure what that is, on the left.

Some #bird vaguely raptor like, perhaps the Intrepid Serengeti Birdwatching Society would like a go at identifying.
#bustard #thompsons

That's an extreme close up of some sort of bird. Peafowl?
#thompsons sparring
#buffalo
#zebra having a dustbath?
Pretty cool with the shadow of the probably #grants
Aww
Aargh, hit the wrong button. #dikdik ?
It's lovely to be back!
Maybe a #spotted-hyena?
Who's who?
#researchers #humans #4wd
#wildebeest Don't forget the "looks like" help.
#water #wildebeest
#baby #hartebeest gambolling!
What are these? I made a guess... the noses and ears didn't look quite right to me though.
#lion maybe?
Good diagnostic #Grants
#topi
Your intrepidity seems in good shape davidbygott!
Clearly a UFO.
One #buffalo and about a million flies. Sorry, 51+ flies. 😃
#baby #wildebeest very cute.
#baby wildebeest
#water A rare view of water. I wonder if we'll see animals come to drink?
#wildebeest at a crepuscular moment, very beautiful.
Would these be #duiker ?
First Season 8 request from me to the Intrepid Serengeti Birdwatching Society ... what could these #bird s be?
Could be a #bird could be an insect, top right 2nd frame.
#human #slate M05 1441
Does this look elandy?
This is a #grants , the pale at the top of the rump is diagnostic.

Here's a puzzle - a #zebra is quite close to a mystery animal, bottom left. Mystery beast is moving a stick (don't think it's a horn?)
Unconcerned gazelle despite the #fire
#human #slate 06Sep13 E12 0911
#zebra and probable #mongoose of some sort or other
#serval
#researcher #human #4wd
Did you see the one in the foreground? Or didn't you want to talk about the elephant in the room? 😃 Sorry.
Alien mothership about to beam up some hartebeest, maybe? As if the Serengeti doesn't have enough to deal with terrestrial poachers!
I think it's a #baboon , couldn't work it out at first.
Might these be #reedbuck ?
Really? Gosh, that's an unexpected field mark, brittanymitchell, thanks!
Nice one!
One for the Unicorns of Africa file!
Pretty cool pic of a #spotted-hyena
#aardvark Huh I think this might be the second time I've seen one in nearly 6000 views.
4 #guineafowl unconcerned as a #bird - maybe a raptor of some sort soars past. Perhaps the Intrepid Serengeti Birders can identify.
Odd #4wd
Something melanistic REALLY close up. Just joking. 😃
Quite striking with the #wildebeest coming straight for us.
Quite a few #elephant
Quite an evocative sequence with the #thompsons
Cat or Jackal or something else?
Aw, I thought it might have been a young buffalo.
My favourite camera!
#interacting #grants
Apparently the square mark on the elbow make it an #eland ?
Lots of flies! I wonder if this is a buffalo or a wildebeest?
#topi at night
Two little furry #mongoose I think in the background running over the rocks. And a #thompsons
Not sure of the species in this one...bit too far away for me, even enlarged.
#hartebeest
Good spotting, I missed the second giraffe. Nice scene though - #giraffe #thompsons Two grey shapes under tree on right anything?
I'd call it a Thompson's, because with the Grant's "Long black lines extend from both corners of their eyes" This one only has to nose.
Huh, I thought it was a #warthog doing that strange thing that they do.
#elephant pretty cool shot.
Voted most photogenic branch of the Serengeti 3 seasons running!
Can just make out a couple of beasts in frame 3, eland? hartebeest? Dunno.
#human #slate MOY 9 Apr 2:3(?)
#wildebeest
#secretary-bird peeks in.
There are spots there, but I'm not sure...
Ha ha, young ALMOST present I'd say!
That's classic, that is.
Small critter on the left or just an odd shaped bush?
Cute!
Amazing...poor creatures.
I thought that the Grant butt was more Grant than the side stripe was Thommo. 😃
#elephant
Is that a balloon in the background being deflated?
#lioness
#elephant eating a very thorny acacia branch - I didn't know they could eat such thorns!
One day I'm going to see this branch with a rhino or something. In the meanwhile, it's just the famous branch.
Another couple of #bird for the intrepid Serengeti birders.
#human #slate 12 Sept 13 KO
'ear 'ear I don't know, could it be an impala?
It's the famous branch.
Oh, cool, I got it right!
#Grant's from the rear, thommo from the side...
Hard to make these guys out...
#bird on the right. I think.
#reedbuck
Dunno, #bird of course, two of 'em. Maybe some sort of raptors, but just a very cool, dramatic sort of a shot. Give it your best shot, ISB's
Oh no! How does an elephant do with such an injury?
#male
Is this a Topi?
#warthog and another animal I marked as a #zebra, which appears in frame three amongst the vegetation toward the left, in the background.
I think it's an Impala... black tipped ears, more reddish, and it doesn't have the lines from the eyes like the the Thompson's and Grants.
#jackal probably?
I hope that #elephant 's trunk is just at an odd angle and it hasn't lost it!
#bird, bottom left hand corner, probably identifiable by the intrepid Serengeti birders.
#human #slate 109 (?) 24 Apr
I see #fire
A Hallmark moment with #young #wildebeest. Amidst flowers, yet.
#kori-bustard
I am hoping that's a serval with its young.
Am I seeing the tail of a smaller elephant in frame one? Or is it just a stick or something?
#zebra #young Can I see hartebeest to the right, in the background?
#secretary-bird with secretary bird's stick.
Identifiable #bird for our intrepid Serenget birders.
Awesome, thanks, it looked very un-mongoose like in that position.
#slate 25/06/13 C12 1100
#bird coming in to land, frame 3 might give the intrepid Serengeti birders something to go on.
#wildebeest tails are very horse like.
#spotted-hyena having a look around.
Oh, you have lbj's too! Glad it's not just my continent!
Maybe a flehmen response in the #zebra, maybe not. Some #impala back there, for what it's worth.
Cute little furry thing I don't think I've seen before, any guesses? Or is a baby something that I know?
#grants
#bird identifiable but is it the same species as the one hopping about in the midground?
Frame two has a #bird but even the intrepid Serengeti birders might not be able to say what it is, close up, but can't see the head...
One #bird taking off in the mid ground, one in the bottom right corner, possibly identifiable by our intrepid Serengeti birders.
A few. #slate #human 012 22 Apr 8:50
Psssst, hey, buddy, over here!
Hey, I thought you knew where the migration was going! Does ANYONE know?
A rather dramatic scene. Nothing in it, but still pretty dramatic.
#bat maybe?
There should be a 'grooming' or 'preening' option. 😃
Happy! But I guess you'd put 'moving'.
#guineafowl out in the sun
#human #slate 25/June D09 0934 Looking good on the Serengeti!

Hello branch!
Fine figure of a #warthog
#Wildebeest and #bird #superb-starling http://www.birds.cornell.edu/Publications/Birdscope/Spring2005/superb_starling.html Interesting!
#hippo
Oops, missed the 2nd #giraffe, I have made a giraffe gaffe.
One lonely #guineafowl. And a branch.
My second #topi of the day, after a long absence of them.
That's interesting, I'll bear it it mind, thanks once more!
That's what I thought, I marked 2. I wonder if they're hearing the camera mechanism, and thinking to catch whatever small animal is inside.
peek-a-boo #spotted-hyena (probably)
#thompsons and some sort of lapwing / plover sort of looking #bird
The famous branch.
Wow, what a dramatic picture! I guess this must be a black-backed #jackal - looking for small game flushed by the #fire ?
#human #slate 05 JUL HO5 0842
Hey cool, a #topi , haven't seen one of those in a while.
Thanks, davidbygott, I thought it might have been an impala, oh well.
Hello, branch.
An #impala , just.
Is that a vehicle moving from left to right near the tree I wonder, or just something going fast?
Bunch of #guinea-fowl I think. Frame 3 that little helmeted head pops up. I think.

Must be #ostrich season today, hadn't seen any for ages and now...
#elephant watching casually as I guess one of the balloon #truck go by.
#hyena-spotted
#bird might be identifiable.
Oh good, others think it's a #serval playing.
hey, an #ostrich, haven't seen one of them in a few hundred photos, and that branch again, an old friend.
#thompsons wants some shade, but #secretary-bird says, yeah, want to make something of it?
What the.. oh it's a #zebra. I nearly put something else entirely, but then in frame 2 I saw the other zebra under the tree...
#elephant nicely framed by another
Yes, I think that might have been my first time.
Nearly missed the 2nd #giraffe
That's a lot of wildebeest
#hartebeest and a fine one at that
Let's play identify the ear!
Lots of #impala
Of course! I thought it was artificial but it seemed a lot closer, tricky perspective!
Right, top corner, 3rd frame. ?
Very impressive. Our Glossy Starling in Australia doesn't have the red front. Of course the Common starling is an introduced pest here.
There's that branch again, again.
There's that branch again.
We sure are!
Camera box might need some work
Very pretty #bird, probably identifiable by Serengeti birders.
Attack of the 50 foot #wildebeest!
Cute fluffy #warthog
I guess we mark it as #bird, other, if it's not actually a Kori Bustard.
Ear description we are given is "Black tufts of hair between their ears" so not surely at all, really, for volunteers unfamiliar with.
Unusual to see a vehicle going along, giraffes unconcerned.
#slate #human 16 8# 13 M07 10:32
Serval earls maybe?
#human what the heck... is that... a tractor or one of the balloon trucks?

The most #elephant I have seen together to date.
This is an unusual view - looks almost reptilian. What has such a pointy snout?
#thompsons #bird may be identifiable.
#spotted hyena and a large #bird and an #insect #dragonfly
Doing the #impala walk
I'm always glad to see this camera view, it's my favourite.
#poo
A fine #warthog
#hartebeest and perhaps a gecko exploring the camera? #reptile
reedbuck , maybe?
#bird identifiable probably by Serengeti birders. #zebra
#bird probably good enough view for Serengeti birders to get an identification from.
It was a puzzling tail.
Is that a secretary bird, (3) right?
Ah, I think that's what was confusing me, I was forgetting the hartebeest horn goes horizontal for a bit.
#bird I guess unless you have big flying foxes on the Serengeti?
#slate
The tuft of hair is what threw me.. didn't see it in the example photos.
#eland
#bird probably a white crowned something #thompsons
Fog or smoke I wonder?
Interesting patterning.
#impala #bird
#mongoose
Is that a very dark zebra on the left? Are there such things as melanistic zebras, anyway?
Not too certain what this one was.
Am I seeing part of a gazelle's horn?
#mongoose "What do you think Sarge?"
#elephant #young
Forgot to mark the #bird
#thompson gazelle. On Mars, apparently.
#lion not much of a tail tip..
My first #aardwolf I think. Or at most, second.
#hartebeest romance?
Some oxpecker or something on a very #young eland.
#wildebeest #young
#bird really good view, looks a bit like the Laughing Turtledoves introduced to bits of Western Australia.
#bird gave me a laugh.
One of those bizarre night time mysteries.
Oooh, cool!
#insects locusts or something - quite large.
#human maybe?
#Impala are my favourite out of Thompson's, Grants and Impala.
#impala You know, I think this is my favourite camera. I call it the Impala Walk. But I just saw a giraffe on it too, it's not just impalas.
#giraffe hooves look muddy, maybe there's water nearby.
Oops, I forgot the #bird !
#elephant most I've seen together.
Thought it was a hippo at first.
I did a google search of the two sorts of calf (are baby antelopes called that or are they fawns or something else?) and I can't decide.
The #impala were easy! The #banded-mongoose I just couldn't work out at all - thanks once more davidbygott!

#Hippo

I wonder what this is?
#Topi I think and what might be a bustard looking disapproving.
#waytooclose
#fire very close!
Very funny animated.
Large, black, tufted tail, I think based on what we have I'd have put buffalo...
There IS something there, so we can't say nothing. They want us to make our best guess.
#male Thought there was a baby elephant at first.
Ummm #jackal ?
#reedbuck maybe?

Pretty dark heads on a couple of those #zebra, hybrids or more likely shadow I guess.

#cattle #cow but I could be wrong?
Warthogs do you think?
#buffalo Big fella. With #bird passenger.

Classic #elephant
If anyone ever wondered just what an #impala tail looked like, this is for you.
Hippo or warthog?
I thought it was a #batearedfox too - pity we can't see the head.
Warthog yoga.
#odd I wonder what those are? Are there any light emitting insects on the Serengeti?
Great photo of the shadow of the tree.
Can I make out a bit of dead zebra here?

Wondering if that's an apprehensive wildebeest on the right. Clearly #buffalo on the left, biiiiig male in the middle of them.

#dramatic #zebra You know, sometimes these automatic cameras take pictures I'd be proud to have shot. Worth all the waving grass and bums.

Secretary Bird with a snake for dinner? I remember reading somewhere secretary birds eat snakes, yeah? Or is it just its legs dangling down?
Thanks once more, your diagnostic advice enabled me to identify a similar photo.

Thanks!

Would these have been impala?
Dik Dik with young present?
It's a mammal...probably a herbivore. One that's reddy-brown. Quite a big one?
Oh good.
This is what happens when you forget to play the entire lot of frames.
Giraffe?
Not sure what that is in the distance...
