Snapshot Serengeti Talk
Please, if in doubt don't hashtag. This image of an impala will now come up in any search for 'bird'
No this is a Thomson's gazelle, note the black stripe down its flank. Steenbok lake this.
oh yes a great capture of a caracal
Just vegetation, it would be very unusual to see guinea-fowl on the ground after dark, but never impossible as nature always teaches us.
I would go for an aardwolf, looks kind of small from this angle.
cheetah
serval
leopard
Ahh... the Serengeti, lovely shot
Its a Topi, those black marks on the legs help id it
Defiantly an owl, probably marsh owl
Not too sure but it looks like a shrike.
Looks like a hartebeest.
these are banded mongoose, you can classify them under mongoose.
great shot of two springhare
I see the warthog in the foreground but I can't make out anything else
this is a mongoose, a white- tailed to be exact.
Hartebeest
hartebeest
The sand coloured animal is a young wildebeest, they are much paler than the adults.
Yep its a herd of wildebeest
This one is a male lion, correct.
No this is a wildebeest, their bodies can appear surprisingly stripy, especially up close
Its a topi, you can make out the black markings on the legs, just
yep serval, see the large ears
Its a guinea fowl, think it just looks dark due to the light, notice the blue bare neck.
Its a male lion with flies buzzing around him.
I'd say wildebeest, looks like a herd huddled together.
I see at least 4 wildebeest here.
Great interaction! I can only think that hyena is full!
It could be but I think it is a bird tail. In other shots it is clearer.
yep, lion back paw.
definitely a hare
looks like the underside of a bird that is perhaps perching on the camera.
These are impala. You can just make out the black marks on the bum of the female laying down.
yep, they do like the shade of a tree to snooze away the afternoon. We like a tree to strap a camera to.
it is a hartebeest with its head down eating in the right hand corner.
these are buffalo walking in a line.
after clicking identify you can add more species before you click on finish.
This is an impala, Grant's have a thinner whiter tail.
Could be, or perhaps a African grass owl, I can't tell from this pic.
looks like a white bellied bustard
gape looks as though it reaches behind the eye so thought it was a steppe, but could just be a trick of the picture/light.
no its a spurfowl or francolin, a type of game bird.
I would say a bustard or a korhaan, perhaps black-bellied.
looks like a hornbill not sure which type
An eagle, perhaps a steppe eagle.
that slight striping is typical of wildebeest
This is someone's snout, close up looks like there is some stripes so thinking possibly zebra.
possible hartebeest
probably another wildebeest laying down.
yep I'd go for buffalo, you can see it has fine hair, more than on a rhino or elephant.
looks like a thompsons gazelle
oh yes, I think you are right.
looks like a buffalo
No its a zebra, you can just make out the stripes in the top corner
looks like superb starling
Think this is an eland, look at the dewlap and the fin band on the foreleg
great bat-eared fox shot
Yes mongoose would be correct, there are several species in the Serengeti but we just classify as mongoose.
yes elephant tail
spotted hyena
that is a white tailed mongoose
These are wildebeest, notice the rump buffalo would be much heavier.
Unfortunately this is a warthog, see the 'warts' on the side of its head
wildebeest
lions
It is possible but would be very rare. probably more of the herd just out of sight of the camera.
He is just showing off his nice horns and how strong he is. There is probably another impala out of shot.
Definitely a buffalo
possibly urinating/defecating. The lifting of the tail and slight squatting would indicate this.
or... it could be the underside of a bird tail, owl maybe?
could be a lizard or skink?
look more like wildebeest with heads facing the bottom right corner (but down eating).
hyena with gazelle running for it in the back ground
bird tail
This is beautiful
I wondered if it was an eland's dewlap? its a stumper though
What's your guess?
Elephant at 'the puddle'
serval?
slinky cheetah
heron
stunning cheetahs
contemplating the day, a spotted hyena
No, fires appear quite frequently in the Serengeti and are a natural part of a savannah ecosystem.
serval, seems to be a lot around.
looks like it
dik dik
lovely leopard
cheetah up close
Think this is a wildebeest in the sun, you can make out its mane.
cows
great fire shot
I think its Burchell's, Grevy's stripes don't extend down around the stomach like that.
No, a bird's tail.
No it looks like maybe a babbler (see the red eye)sitting on a fallen branch. Not so great at Tansanian birds but its definitely a passerine
Could be a lion, 20 mins later there are two in the shot.
Two white storks and a thompsons gazelle, not a hare
researcher opening the camera maybe
bushbuck fawn suckling
almost looks like a snare scar on this giraffe leg
It is a white tailed mongoose
looks more serval like, small size!
steenbok again
may be back side of a baboon, or the same warthog fro the shot before at a strange angle. Very hard to tell.
nice portrait of eland with zebs in the back ground
#serval
nice shot
Looks like a herd of zebra
They are elephants
I see a belly and a leg and tail. On the leg you can see a vein, is that what you say is a hose?
they look like hartebeest, notice the downwards slant from head to tail.
not sure, it looks bit like a banded mongoose to me

Three young hartebeest
Ah thanks, those are great.
I always hope to find a cheetah lounging on the rock but in the multiple times I've seen this spot, only birds there. Its a perfect lookout
#The Rock, has anyone had an animal other than birds on this rock!
great shot of birds, think they are doves
Looks very hartebeest like. They often stand right in front of the camera
definitely a serval agree there.
#male bushbuck
oh nice one, I got a civet a while back but was just a tail.
#hyena, very hansome
#grant's gazelle
#young zebra
Not a guinea fowl, maybe a korhaan.
Agree with zebs in back ground. Critter in front left corner looks like it has a horn when it moves. Its not a close up warthog, too far.
Think this is a rhino. Though difficult to say for sure.
Dik dik with young
fire!
#caracal
Those are impala
#hyena
This elephant has such a straight tusk, love the baby behind.
