  I went for mongoose. But it didn't look like any of the mongoose pictures.

  IIRC, there are 30 -35 species in the mongoose family, which can range from under a pound to 10 pounds, with any variety of fur from short and stripy to long and flecked. My rule of thumb is, if it has a pointy face like a weasel and a hunched back, and isn't marked like a cat, it's probably a mongoose.

  Yeah, it's a mongoose -- judging by the faint stripes on its underside, I think it's probably a banded mongoose.
